Hunt Slonem
b. 1951, Maine, United States
''The many and various worlds of Hunt Slonem are revelatory, empathic and ecstatic. They are often fantastic realms that encourage us to see and experience the real world- newly made and fresh- as if for the first time. Slonem’s highly subjective vision speaks to a re-enhanced state in which man connects with the earth through its plant and animal life, as well as through its seers, mystics, and celebrities.
His is a mystical art because it cuts through everyday responses and hones in on the strangeness of the here and now, realized in its full intensity. Through the art of Hunt Slonem we find a means to de-condition and re-condition our responses to the world and come to terms with Otherness.
The painted realms of Hunt Slonem contain admixtures of otherworldliness and familiarity. His works present visual reality (images of flowers, plants, and birds, for example), yet these works are also at odds with the representational to the point of relinquishing their hold on the mimetic almost completely at times.
Slonem’s loose, expressionistic brushwork emphasizes an aesthetic of motion and ocular activity. His use of colors and mark making recalls the interiorized mood of the Symbolists, as well as the brash extroversion of the Fauvists’ palette.
Slonem’s own color choices have range widely, from subtle mixed hues of peach, rose and acid green to more forthright blues, violets and grays, stretching into riotous neon pink and red and very big greens. He has used gold in variety of ways, mixing it with other colors, letting it stand on its own, and applying it as an undercoat that peaks out from beneath other colors.
The artist has also mastered blacks and whites, using them skillfully to crete haunting works evocative of stillness and aloneness, as well as paintings filled with joyful innocence.''
